Ringette is fast, fun, and one of the most exciting team sports on ice, especially once you understand how it works! Whether you’re brand new or just curious, here’s a quick guide to the basics of how to play.
Ringette is played on an ice rink using:
A straight stick (no blade)
A blue rubber ring
Five skaters and one goalie per team on the ice at a time
The objective? Score goals by passing the ring and outsmarting the other team, not by taking it coast to coast on your own. Ringette is all about speed, strategy, and teamwork.
Unlike hockey, you can’t carry the ring over the blue lines by yourself, you must pass it to a teammate. That means:
Every player gets involved in every play
Teamwork is more important than individual breakaways
Athletes learn how to think, move, and communicate together
Ringette is a non-contact sport with rules that emphasize safety, skill, and precision:
No body checking
Defensive play focuses on positioning, not aggression
Stick checking is controlled and regulated
This makes it a great choice for young athletes who want a fast-paced game in a safe, supportive environment.
Each team has their own offensive zone, separated by a “free play line” (a thin red line inside the blue line). Only three skaters from each team can be inside the offensive zone at once. This keeps things organized, fast-moving, and strategic.
Goalies play a key role in ringette. They use a special stick to throw the ring to teammates, and they must be quick, smart, and decisive.
Bonus: Walden Ringette offers discounted fees for goalies!
Ringette has something for every age and skill level:
FUNdamentals (ages 4-8) focuses on skating and basics through play
U10 to U19 divisions offer both recreational and competitive streams
Adults can even join open ringette or coach!
